The Newport Black's are best described as a classic "British" mixture. Undoubtedly "English" when it comes to support at inter-nation sporting events, there is also a rich assortment running through our veins from all four corners of the UK. Predominantly of Celtic rather than Saxon origins there are contributions from the Normans too.

Of the generations that are alive today three could represent any of the UK national teams whereas the latter could now only play for England. Since there is no such thing as a Cornish national team there is little conflict of interest amongst family members but it's considered a very good thing that we live in a "united" Kingdom! The next generation to be born in our Village can rightly be called "Men of Bosham", provided : a) if female the rules be modified slightly, and b) if male "living from the sea" would include selling fish to the Pub!

Top left: The GRIFFIN, one of heraldry’s fabulous creatures, has the head, wings and talons of an Eagle and the body of a Lion. It is one of the principal bearings in heraldry and symbolises someone who would rather fight to the death than be held captive. It also symbolises Vigilance. The AXE is an emblem of a Warrior Chief.

Griffin, or Gryphon, (fr. griffon): Although variously drawn, the great principle is that it is a compound of the Lion and the Eagle. The lower part of its body, with the tail and the hind-legs, belong to the lion; the head and the fore-part, with the legs and talons, to those of the eagle, but the head retains the ears of the lion. It has large wings, which closely resemble those of the eagle.  Sources Heraldry.co.uk  & Heraldsnet.org
